Blood and Iron – these words stand for one of the most colourful and at the same time most controversial personalities in Germany’s history.
Due to his patriotic belligerence and various socio-political measures such as the implementation of health-, accident and old-age insurance, Otto von Bismarck was a national hero and was the first Chancellor of the newly founded German Reich, in 1871.
Otto von Bismarck, born in 1815, was already a supporter of the monarchy at a very early age and was in close contact with the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV.
Bismarck’s fiery temperament which surfaced in pistol duels and emotive speeches, induced the king to send the ambitious politician abroad as an ambassador for several years. Strengthened by this experience, on his return in 1862 he was even more important than before and was appointed Minister-President by the king and the first German Chancellor on the creation of the German Reich. Otto von Bismarck died in 1889, however the „Iron Chancellors“ myth still lives on to this day. Hundreds of monuments commemorate the famous politician and already in 1895 450 cities appointed him an honorary citizen.
