The Half Dome is situated in Yosemite National Park in the U.S. State of California and is 2693 m high. With its characteristic semi spherical shape, this mountain is the national parks landmark and together with El Capitan is one of the most photographed motives in it. The Half Dome consists of Granodiorite which is a very solid rock. Its rounded forms near the peak were formed by salt- and temperature weathering. This leads to the so-called desquamation – fine rock scaling or whole rock pieces which detach themselves from the face of the cliff. Every year thousands of hikers climb the Half Dome. If one is in good shape it can be climbed via the normal route. It takes skilled hikers eight to twelve hours to complete the ascent and descent comprising 25 km and 1500 m in height. Steel wires allow less experienced mountaineers to complete the last 120 m ascent – a gradient of over 45° on smooth flat rock.

Since the beginning of 2010 a registration for the summit ascent is required for safety reasons. These registrations are limited.
