Padre Pio was born on May 25th, 1887 in the Italian Pietrelcina as Francesco Forgione. At the age of 15 he entered the noviciate of the Capuchin Friars, completed his theological studies and was ordained a priest in 1910. From 1916 up until his death in 1968 he lived in the monastery San Giovanni Rotonda in Apulia. There he performed the duties of father confessor, spiritual succour and healer.

His visible stigmata wounds on his hands, feet and chest caused a stir particularly after 1918. Subsequently, more and more believers attended his mass. Due to donations, Padre Pio was able to build one of Italy’s most modern hospitals in San Giovanni Rotondo, which he opened in 1956. Accompanying growing admiration for him, were doubters and the Vatican‘s scepticism. For decades it balked against the nearly hysterical cult surrounding the mysterious padre.

Only after his death did Pope Paul VI dismiss all accusations against Padre Pio. Finally, Pope John Paul II cleared Padre Pio’s name completely. He beatifi ed the charismatic Father in 1999 and in May 2002 canonised him in front of 300‘000 believers in Rome.
