Although it was announced as a pure pilgrimage, the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in the Holy Land from the 8th up until the 15th May 2009 was anticipated with suspense. A German Pope who had witnessed the Second World War as a boy was visiting the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem. Pope Benedict who attracted the Muslims enragement with his speech in Regensburg was the first Pope ever to visit the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem which is one of the main sanctuaries of the Islam faith. A catholic spiritual leader was among Jews and Arabs in the minefield of the Palestine conflict as an admonisher of peace.

Retrospective the Israel journey with stops in Amman, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth was a success. From the numerous speeches and monologues which Benedict gave the approval of the Bilateral Settlement will especially stay in remembrance. Just as the clear statement to the persecution of the Jews: ?May the names of these victims never perish! May their suffering never be denied, belittled, or forgotten!?
