Description

Since the days of Babylon and in old Egypt until today, Pearls have been used in Jewellery. Natural Pearls are extremely rare, and are only found in one in every 10,000 animals.

Any mollusc either in freshwater or in sea water which produces a shell can produce a pearl. The cultured pearl industry which has flourished since 1920, was originally founded in Japan. Amother-of- pearl sphere with 90% of the desired final size is implanted into an Oyster shell and the coating process is then stimulated.
Present day marine pollution has had a great impact both on natural pearl finds and even in the cultured pearl industry near coastlines. Great losses have been incurred by oil pollution and the waste produced by man.
