Description

Between 1487 and 1488, Bertholomeu Dias discovered the route around the Cape of Hope and opened the trading door to India.
On his first voyage to India in 1498, Vasco da Gama investigated the shores of South West Africa and occupied the island of Mozambique, situated off the coast of today?s Mozambique. In 1507, a Fortress was erected here and a community was established to safeguard the trading route to India.
For ships passing the Cape of Good Hope on route to India, the Fortress and harbor served as a haven from the southwest monsoon winds between April and October. On their return, using the northeast winds between October and April, they used the harbor to replenish water and food supplies, whilst waiting for favorable weather conditions around the Cape of Good Hope on their return home.
