A volcano is a geological structure which occurs when magma rises to the surface of the earth. This term is derived from the Italien island Vulcano. In the Roman mythology this island was applied to as Vulcanus? smithy who is the Roman God of fire.

In a depth as from 100 km, in which temperatures lie between 1?000 and 1?300 degrees centigrade, rocks melt to tough-plastic magma which collects itself in large drop shaped herds of magma in 2 to 50 km depth. As soon as the pressure becomes too large the magma ascends through cleavages and gaps. Magma which reaches the earth?s surface in this manner is called lava. When a volcanic eruption occurs not only ember liquid but also firm or gaseous substances are set free. Worldwide there are about 1?900 active volcanoes. Despite certain things in common, no volcano, in its eruption behaviour, resembles the other. This is the reason why observations of dwell phases and seismic activities of one volcano are hardly transferable to another.

The 241 islands of the Republic of Palau, of which eleven are inhabited, are all volcanic origin. Some of them protrude high out of the sea. The Koror Island, on which the capital of Palau is located, consists of coral limestone which has buoyed itself on sunken volcanic cones.

In remembrance of the origin of Palau, the insular state has released a special coin. Genuine volcanic rock from Palau is used on the coin and lends each individual piece its special significance. As a further distinctive feature genuine 24 carat gold was added to this partially coloured coin.
