According to the American legend the former President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt was invited to a bear hunt in which he refused to shoot a baby bear. A cartoonist captured this incident in a picture and the outcome of this “Teddy’s bear” became the Presidents symbol.

According to the German legend the inventor Richard Steiff developed the first teddy bear with movable arms and legs in 1902. After initial sales difficulties an American businessman acquired the bear at an exhibition in Leipzig as a small token to take home. Indirectly the toy found its way to Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary who gave it as a gift to the president’s daughter. The girl was so thrilled that she named the bear after her father – Teddy. The teddy bears triumph in nurseries in the whole world was ensured.
