The Ten Commandments, or Decalogue (Greek: ?????????), is a text in the Bible in which God gives religious and moral precepts to the people of Israel from the mountain referred to as Mount Sinai[2] or Horeb[3]. These precepts are said in the Bible to be spoken by God to those present at Mount Sinai, and subsequently to be inscribed by God with his finger on two stone tablets, which God gave to Moses. The text comprises two similar passages of roughly 15 verses, in Exodus 20:2–17[4] and Deuteronomy 5:6–21[5]. The precepts are referred to elsewhere in the Bible as the ten devarim (statements)[6], which has been the basis for dividing the text into ten parts. They include instructions to worship God alone and to keep the Sabbath as well as prohibitions against murder, theft and adultery.
