The Weisshorn which is situated in the Swiss canton Valais, is one of the most beautiful mountain pyramids in the Alps and for many a fascinating mountain. Crossing the Cabane de Tracuit along the North Ridge and the descent over the East Ridge to the Weisshorn Hut is one of the biggest tours in the western Alps. This crossing can only be attempted in optimal conditions and stable weather. The first ascent of the Weisshorn across the Eastern Ridge, today’s standard route, was on August 19th 1861 by John Tyndall, Johann Joseph Brennen von Steinhaus und Ulrich Wengerüber.
In the three big ridges of the Weisshorn, the rock is often of bad quality. The rock- and icefall endangered flanks are therefore, rarely climbed. Only the Younggrat is a reasonably safe alternative. It was named after the British mountaineer Geoffrey Winthrop Young who, with two guides, chose this ascent for the first time on September 7th 1900.
