Popocatepetl, 5426 m high, is not a mountain in the real sense of the word, but a so called composite volcano. The central crater has an impressive diameter of about 600 m. The volcano is still active, having spat out red-hot rocks most recently on June 18th, 2013. The Spaniard Diego de Ordás succeeded in the first ascent of the second highest mountain in Mexico in 1519. Afterwards Emperor Karl V. allowed him to wear the volcano on his coat of arms.
