A new issue from Tanzania commemorates the famed Scottish explorer David Livingstone, whose legacy is still alive across many parts of southern Africa.

David Livingstone, born in 1813, was an explorer and missionary to southern Africa. He discovered Victoria Falls and Lake Malawi and was one of the first Westerners to cross the African continent from west to east. The Royal Geographical Society of London awarded him the gold medal for his explorations. However, Livingstone’s determination was not always well regarded by his fellow travelers, who described him as stubborn and selfserving. Perhaps Livingstone’s famous quote “I am prepared to go anywhere, provided it be forward” corroborates this impression.

Besides his contributions to geography, Livingstone was a missionary and ardent opponent of slavery. His respectful approach earned him the trust of many locals and tribal chiefs, which in turn assisted and facilitated his travels.

On an expedition to find the origin of the Nile River, Livingstone fell ill and eventually succumbed to malaria and dysentery in 1873. In an extraordinary act of honor and respect, his two most faithful followers carried Livingstons’s body over 1000 miles across the continent to the nearest shore to have it shipped to England for burial.
