Karol Wojtyla, who was born in Poland in 1920, led an eventful life. He worked in a

stone quarry during the Second World War to avoid deportation to Germany. He had to

partially work on his theology studies underground.

In 1978, after several posts in the Church and as the first non-Italian since 1523,

he was elected pope John Paul II. Although he was critically injured in an attack in

1981 he remained in office until his death in 2005. He was canonised by Pope Francis

in 2014.
