Description

We proudly present a moving tribute to Louis Braille, the visionary who revolutionized communication for the blind. Born in 1809 in Coupvray, France, Braille lost his sight at age three due to an accident and resulting infection. Despite his blindness, he excelled academically and was admitted to the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris. There, he encountered Charles Barbier’s tactile code, which inspired him to create his own simplified system. By 1829, Braille introduced his six-dot alphabet—compact, efficient, and readable by a single touch. Though he battled illness for much of his life, Braille’s legacy transformed education and communication for the blind worldwide.

This 2 oz .999 silver coin, issued by Cameroon in 2024, is struck in ultra high relief with a deep antique finish. The entire surface is blackened, revealing the bust of Braille, his name, and life dates in both Latin and Braille. A hidden UV effect unveils the full Braille alphabet. The obverse mimics a Braille typewriter layout, with inscriptions in both alphabets. Limited to 500 pieces, the coin measures 45 mm, has a face value of 2000 Francs CFA, and is presented in a wooden box with certificate.
