A Trojan Horse is a tale from Greek mythology where the Greeks, after a decade-long siege on the city of Troy, used a giant hollow wooden horse to infiltrate the city. Today, the phrase describes any trick or stratagem that causes a target to invite a hidden danger inside. The Mythological StoryAccording to epic poetry, including Virgil’s Aeneid, the Greeks constructed a massive wooden horse and hid a select group of elite warriors inside, including Odysseus. The rest of the Greek fleet pretended to give up and sailed away to the nearby island of Tenedos. They left behind a single Greek spy, Sinon, who convinced the Trojans that the horse was an offering to the goddess Athena meant to make Troy impregnable. Despite warnings from the priest Laocoön, the Trojans brought the colossal horse inside their city walls and celebrated their “victory”. In the middle of the night, the Greek warriors crept out of the horse, opened the city gates to the returning Greek army, and successfully conquered Troy.
