Description

The Wojtek the Soldier Bear coin honors the remarkable true story of a Syrian brown bear who served alongside Polish soldiers during World War II. Adopted as a cub in Iran in 1942, Wojtek became an integral part of the Polish army, sharing daily life with the troops. He was officially enlisted and accompanied the soldiers to Italy, where he notably helped carry heavy ammunition during the fierce Battle of Monte Cassino. Wojtek’s presence uplifted morale and symbolized the deep bond between humans and animals during wartime. After the war, he lived at the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, continuing to inspire many. This touching story is beautifully captured on a 2-dollar, 1-ounce silver coin, which features detailed engravings of wartime scenes such as Monte Cassino ruins, bomber planes, and a mortar. Most notably, the obverse of the coin bears Wojtek’s actual paw print, making it a truly meaningful tribute.
