Coin description
The reverse features a dramatic full-color depiction of the Statue of Zeus at Olympia seated upon an immense throne within a majestic temple setting. Illuminated columns and contrasting shadows emphasize the monumental scale and divine authority of Zeus, king of the Greek gods. The classical composition is framed by a decorative Greek meander border, while the inscription “Statue of Zeus at Olympia” appears along the lower edge.
The obverse presents a symbolic composition dedicated to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Surrounding the central Coat of Arms of Niue are detailed depictions representing all seven legendary wonders: the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The inscriptions “NIUE ISLAND,” “2026,” “2 DOLLARS,” and “1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER” complete the design.
Background information
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was created in the 5th century BC by the renowned Greek sculptor Phidias and stood inside the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, Greece. The monumental seated figure of Zeus was crafted using gold and ivory over a wooden framework and was considered one of the greatest artistic and religious achievements of the ancient world. Ancient accounts describe the statue as so immense that Zeus appeared to nearly touch the ceiling of the temple itself. Although the original statue was lost centuries ago, it remains a powerful symbol of classical Greek art, mythology, and architectural grandeur.
