Design

The reverse of the coin depicts a poker game between the Grim Reaper and the viewer, who becomes part of the game, thanks to the perspective used. The human player has some cards in his hands and shows a Royal Flush, which is the hand of the highest possible value. One of the cards features the inscription “2022” – the year of issue. Sure to win the game, the man decides to bet his soul, which he is holding in his left hand. However, the same moment when the man is sure to win and bets his soul, the ace in his hands starts changing and becomes a skull. The story continues on the obverse of the coin, showing the Grim reaper taking the man’s soul. Death changed one of the cards in the man’s hand and secured the game with a poker of aces, causing the man’s fury. The reverse of the coin of the first coin in the series has the inscription: “YOU CAN’T CHEAT DEATH”, while this coin features the inscription: “…BUT DEATH CAN CHEAT YOU”, finishing the phrase and highlighting the fact that men have no power in front of death. The obverse of the coin also incorporates the tilted Coat of Arms of Palau, depicted on one of the fiches, with the inscriptions: “REPUBLIC OF PALAU” – the country of issue and “20$” – the face value.
