Flags of America
The Flags of America Commemorative coin set has been minted
in celebration of the 4th of July 2010, the 50th anniversary of
the re-design of the flag of the USA. The first set of coins will be
presented to United States President Barak Obama.
Grand Union Flag
The first true US flag, combining the British Union Jack with thirteen stripes
signifying colonial unity. The thirteen red & white stripes represented
the original colonies, the use of the British Union in the upper corner
indicated a continued loyalty, to the government against which they fought.
At the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776,
the United States had no official national flag. The Grand Union Flag has
historically been referred to as the ?First National Flag?; although it has never
had any official status, it was used early in the American Revolutionary War
and formed the basis for the design of the first official US flag.
Betsy Ross Flag
Attributed to Betsy Ross and using the common motifs of alternating
red-and-white striped field with white stars in a blue canton. The flag
was designed during the American Revolution and features 13 stars to
represent the original 13 colonies. The distinctive feature of the Ross flag
is the arrangement of the five-pointed stars in a circle. It is the first official
American flag to be recognized internationally & is the flag that resulted
from congressional action June 14, 1777.
The original Betsy Ross flag was made in 1776, when a small committee
visited Betsy and discussed the need for a new American flag. Betsy?s
contribution was a five-pointed star, and she accepted the job to sew the first.
50 Star Flag
The 50 star flag became official on July 4, 1960 with the addition of Hawaii
to the union. It has been the emblem of the United States for the last 47
years. Today, the official flag of the USA is the most widely recognized
symbol in the world. It is the only flag to fly on another celestial body.
The American flag consists of thirteen equal stripes of red alternating with
white, with a blue rectangle in the canton bearing fifty small, white, fivepointed
stars arranged in offset horizontal rows of six stars alternating with
rows of five stars. The fifty stars on the flag represent the 50 US states and
the 13 stripes represent the original thirteen colonies that rebelled against
the British and became the first states in the Union.
