Description
The artist created three versions of “Japanese Woman” — one has been lost, another,
after decades in private collections, stirred great excitement at auction, while
the third belongs to the collection of the National Museum in Kraków. It is this museum
composition that inspired a coin allowing collectors to enjoy the beauty of the work
in their own collection. “Japanese Woman” depicts Wanda Pankiewiczowa turned away
from the viewer, dressed in a red kimono and surrounded by a screen and Far Eastern
objects. The decorative use of colour, the elegance of the figure and the fascination
with Japanese art come together in one of the most recognisable compositions
of Polish modernism.
