The seven deadly sins, first identified in the 4th century, include pride, greed, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy, and sloth. These inner attitudes can lead to grave sin.
The fifth issue in the series is dedicated to envy, one of those quiet, often hidden deadly sins that take root in the depths of the human heart. Envy arises when one’s gaze is directed not toward one’s own being, but toward what others have or can do.
The design of this coin captures this destructive dynamic in a striking way: a mighty bear fixes its gaze on an eagle circling majestically above it. The eagle embodies freedom, foresight, and superiority. These are qualities denied to the bear and which could awaken desire and resentment within him. The juxtaposition of the two animals perfectly symbolizes the nature of envy: the desire for something one does not possess and may never attain.
