The Chapel Bridge, the oldest covered wooden bridge, is the most famous sight of the city Lucerne in Switzerland. It served as a defensive corridor and was built in 1365. After completion the bridge which is now over 204 m long was 75 m longer. It was shortened by that length when the river bank was backfilled in 1835. The bridge is unique because of its 111 triangle pictures of which nearly 80 were destroyed in the firestorm in April 1993. Europe’s second longest covered wooden bridge was immediately reconstructed and is open to pedestrian traffic again since 1994.
