The seven wonders of the Ancient World are fascinating even today, just as they were 2000 years ago. Even then several Wonders of the World adorned many coins. With this second edition of high-quality, partly coloured silver coins we are continuing this tradition.

The oldest list of World Wonders originates from around about 450 BC and was compiled by Herodotus. However, today’s most common listing was compiled by a Greek poet by the name of Antipatros from Sidon who registered the most significant objects of interest at that time. This list included the Pyramids of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of
Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.

Astonishingly, all seven structures existed at the same time during a period of less than 60 years until, one by one, they were gradually destroyed by earthquakes, fires and wars.

Several Wonders of the World are only documented in narratives and scripts with the result that it can only be presumed how they looked exactly or on which site they were located. Only the Pyramids of Giza have lasted to this day and in the meantime are well over 4000 years old.
