The Matterhorn, with its almost perfectly symmetrical pyramid peak, is one of the most famous mountains in the world. It is a challenge even for the most experienced mountaineers, and more than 500 climbers have lost their lives on this mountain. With a height of 4478 meters (14,692 feet), it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. It was not conquered until 1865, when a group led by Edward Whymper reached the summit.
This coin tells the exciting and tragic story of the first ascent – with many details. The coin’s edge is engraved with Edward Whymper’s famous quote from the summit: «At 1.40 p.m. the world was at our feet, and the Matterhorn was conquered. Hurrah! Not a footstep could be seen.» Four of the seven members of the team lost their lives on the descent. These fearless men are immortalized on the reverse in their memory.
The exclusive premium edition of this impressive, numbered 1 kg gold coin with a diameter of 100 mm is limited to just 9 pieces worldwide and features Switzerland as the country of issue. Thanks to the innovative smartminting® technology, it impresses with an extraordinary relief of 6 mm on the obverse and 2-3 mm on the reverse. The detailed embossing brings the Matterhorn to life – you can almost hear the wind howling around its massive mountain structure.
