Background information

Gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) are the largest living primates, inhabiting the dense forests of central Sub-Saharan Africa, with Cameroon being one of the countries where they reside. Cameroon is home to the Western Lowland Gorilla, a subspecies known for its intelligence and complex social structures. Sharing about 98% of their DNA with humans, gorillas exhibit behaviors and emotional capacities remarkably similar to our own.

These gentle giants live in family groups called troops, led by a dominant male known as a silverback, named for the distinctive patch of silver hair that develops with maturity. Primarily herbivorous, they feed on a diverse diet of leaves, fruits, stems, and shoots, playing a crucial role in their ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal and vegetation management.

Despite their strength and imposing presence, gorillas are peaceful animals that prefer harmony over conflict. However, gorilla populations in Cameroon and across Africa are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and diseases like Ebola. Conservation efforts in countries like Cameroon are vital to protect these magnificent creatures and ensure that they continue to thrive in their natural habitats for generations to come.
