The Kingfisher is a globally widespread species and can be found living on all continents in rainforests and forests. 87 species are known to exist and can be characterised by their long, straight and sturdy bill. However, the species can differ in size and plumage that can be blue, purple or iridescent in colour.
The European species is called ?Eisvogel? due to its typical behaviour during wintertime. This species watches for fish in ice- free rivers from the safety of the trees near the shore. This species can be seen more visibly as its colourful plumage contrasts with the leaf-less winter trees.
