teep overhanging crags and razor-sharp cliff edges make the Italian massif Three Peaks one of the most striking rock formations in the European Alps. The “Big Peak”, the “Western Peak” and the “Little Peak” are the Dolomites landmark, although the “Big Peak“ with its 2999 m is the highest in the rock formation. The Three Peaks has a 500 m north slope which partly overhangs. Even so, many climbers are attracted to it. The smaller “Western Peak” also has severe overhanging passages and is therefore, also referred to as the “Largest roof of the Alps“. Up until the 19th century, mountaineers and the advertising industry hardly paid attention to the “Three Peaks”. It was not until the First World War that objects with the Three Peaks became popular and were used for advertising purposes. Postcards, stamps, company logos and even popular ice-lollies were designed based on to the rock formation. From this time on, the Peaks also became interesting for mountaineers.
Because so many tourists and locals hike on the easily accessible route around the Three Peaks, it can literally lead to hold ups on the hiking trail on exceptionally beautiful days. So many people do not want to miss the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the remarkable solid rock.
