Makalu is situated on the border of Nepal and Tibet. At 8463 metres it is after all the fifth highest mountain in the world.

On May 15th 1955 the French mountaineers Lionel Terrary and Jean Couzy succeeded in the first ascent. For a long time it was the only eight thousand meter high mountain in Nepal that was not ascended in the wintertime. Only on February 9th 2009 did an Italian-Russian mountaineering duo reach the summit in winter.
