The 43rd Pacific Islands Forum will be held in the Cook Islands from 27-31 August 2012 with more than 300 participants, including delegates, observers, partners agencies and a large media contingent. The theme is “Large Ocean Island States – The Pacific Challenge”.
Founded in 1971, the Pacific Islands Forum is a political grouping of the following 16 states: Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
The goals of the Forum are to stimulate economic growth and enhance political governance and security for the region, through the provision of policy advice; and to strengthen regional cooperation and integration through coordinating, monitoring and evaluating implementation of Leaders’ decisions.
The last Pacific Islands Forum meeting held in the Cook Islands was 15 years ago in 1997. Cook Islands also hosted the Forum Leaders’ meetings on Rarotonga in 1985 and 1974.
The annual Forum meetings are chaired by the Head of Government of the Host Country. To that end, the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, Hon. Henry Puna, will Chair the 43rd Forum Leaders meeting, the Forum Plenary meeting, and the Post Forum Dialogue Partners Plenary meeting.
