Description
This remarkable 1 oz silver coin pays tribute to the historic astronomical clock of St. Mary’s Basilica in Gdańsk, one of the oldest and largest medieval clocks still in existence. Designed in 1470 by master craftsman Hans Düringer, the original mechanism displays lunar phases, zodiac signs, and the liturgical calendar, and even features a procession of the Apostles at noon. The coin faithfully recreates this masterpiece with exceptional precision, combining historical artistry with modern minting techniques. Issued by the Central Bank of Malta as 5 euro legal tender, it is struck in Ag 999 proof quality, enhanced with digital printing and microprinting, and individually numbered along its plain edge. Measuring 50 mm and weighing 31.10 g (1 oz), the coin captures the intricate layers of the clock, including celestial motifs, zodiac figures, sculptural details, and the legendary rotating mechanisms. Limited to 700 pieces, it comes presented in an elegant display case with a detailed certificate. A legend connected to the clock says that a wish made beneath it at noon on February 29th will come true—an added touch of magic to a release that unites medieval engineering, Polish cultural heritage, and fine modern craftsmanship in a single collectible.
